Edmonton saxophonist and bandleader Dave Babcock leads a rich musical life with a quiet confidence that only a man of his abilities and experience can possess. For over three decades he’s earned his reputation as one of Canada’s finest saxophonists, his soulful playing steeped in the living traditions of jazz and blues. A versatile horn man, multi-instrumentalist and singer, Dave has appeared with countless artists from a wide range of musical genres throughout his storied career, while also leading his own successful projects.
Initially coming to prominence as the leader of his award-winning jazz group The Jump Orchestra, Dave also fronts his dynamic blues band The Nightkeepers and The Dave Babcock Quartet. His Jump Orchestra album “Jump To It” was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for ‘Best Instrumental Album’ in 2011. “Jump To It” made it to No. 2 on the CKUA Radio charts and continues to get national airplay on CBC Radio’s ‘Saturday Night Jazz.’
Equally at home onstage and in the studio, Dave won the 2019 Edmonton Event Award for ‘Best Live Music’ and the 2013 Calgary Blues Music Association’s ‘Horn Player of the Year’ award. He was nominated for a 2009 Maple Blues Award for ‘Best Horn Player’ and has appeared as a sideman on two Juno award-winning albums. Dave’s long association with Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite, The Edmonton Folk Music Festival and Stony Plain Records has given him the opportunity to perform and record with some of the biggest names in jazz, blues and R&B.
