Johanna Sillanpaa Quartet

It’s smart, it’s soulful, it’s jazz. For every style of music that Johanna Sillanpaa explores, there’s a vibrant color in her voice to match. Sillanpaa’s vocals are expertly clear, gently raw, and yet intensely bold. She performs thoughtful jazz you can dig your heels into. She and her ensemble have played everywhere from intimate jazz joints across North America and Europe all the way to performing in front of the 60,000-plus crowds of the Montreal Jazz Festival.

  • Johanna Sillanpaa – Vocals
  • Kodi Hutchinson – Bass
  • Sandro Dominelli – Drums
  • Sheldon Zandboer – Piano

John Sweenie 4TET

A perpetual student of music and the saxophone, John Sweenie is one of Western Canada’s fastest rising stars of the Saxophone. John has been bringing his breathtaking technique and fearless improvisation to stages around Alberta for the better part of the last decade. The 4TET Project, founded in December of 2014, blends traditional acoustic quartet sounds with rhythms and harmonies from funk, hip-hop, and rock music. With influences ranging from Joe Henderson and Charles Mingus, to Radiohead and The Wu Tang Clan. Aggressive and introspective at the same time, this is not your grandfather’s jazz quartet.

  • John Sweenie – Sax
  • Doug Organ – Keys
  • Josh McHan – Bass
  • Sam Maloney – Drums

Writers’ Guild

The Writers’ Guild is a jazz composers’ collective featuring five of Edmonton’s finest young creative minds. The band tinkers with the traditional jazz quintet machine, using vintage compositional tools to workshop new tunes and ideas, alchemizing jazz and funk, classical, R&B, and traditional folk musics.

  • Dan Davis – Saxophone
  • Marty Majorowicz – Trombone
  • Tyson Kerr – Keys
  • Josh McHan – Bass
  • Leonard Patterson – Drums

Spiral Flamenco

Spiral Flamenco is a quartet with Jim Findlay guitar/oud, Cam Neufeld violin/mandolin, Michael Williams bass and Dean Pierno percussion. They meld traditional flamenco rhythms and forms with a modern jazz sensibility and create a high energy mix of the two. Flamenco is an improvisational art form by nature, so it lends itself well to jazz.

  • Jim Findlay – Guitar
  • Cam Neufeld – Violin
  • Dean Pierno – Percussion
  • Michael Williams – Bass
