The remarkably versatile
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
,
composed of 15 of today’s finest jazz soloists and ensemble players, has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra for more than 13 years. Featured in all aspects of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performs and leads educational events in New York, across the U.S. and around the world; in concert halls, dance venues, jazz clubs, public parks, river boats, and churches; and with symphony orchestras, ballet troupes, local students and an ever-expanding roster of guest artists.

Wynton Marsalis (Music Director, Trumpet) is the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, Mr. Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12 and soon began playing in local bands of diverse genres. He entered The Juilliard School at age 17 and joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Mr. Marsalis made his recording debut as a leader in 1982, and since he has recorded more than 30 jazz and classical recordings, which have won him nine Grammy Awards.

Pink Martini
falls somewhere between a 1930’s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band and Japanese film noir. “We’re kind of like musical archaeologists, bringing melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something which is modern,” says founder and pianist Thomas L. Lauderdale. “It’s like an urban music travelogue,” he adds.

Lauderdale formed the Portland, Oregon-based “little orchestra” in 1994 and soon after took the world by storm performing a mixed bag of swinging Afro-Cuban rhythms, Parisian café tunes, Caribbean calypso and Hollywood golden-era string arrangements at sold out concerts on several continents.

The band released its debut album, Sympathique, on its own label Heinz Records, named after Lauderdale’s dog, in 1997; Pink Martini quickly became an international phenomenon, garnering the group nominations for Song of the Year and Best New Artist in France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards. Seven long years later, Pink Martini released its highly-anticipated follow-up, Hang on Little Tomato, which climbed to Number One on Amazon.com’s best-sellers list.

This exciting 12-piece band has showcased its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Canada and the United States. The band has appeared at the Cannes Film Festival; the grand opening of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Walt Disney Concert Hall; the opening of the New York Museum of Modern Art; the Kennedy Center; and alongside soul legend Al Green at the William Morris Agency’s 100th birthday celebration.
