Born 18 March 1964 in London, at school he studied the clarinet and although he is known primarily for his saxophone playing, Pine is a multi-instrumentalist, also playing the flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and keyboards. On his 2011 album, Europa, he plays almost exclusively bass clarinet. In 1986 his debut album Journey to the Urge Within became the first serious jazz album ever to make the British Top 40 (significantly earning a Silver Disc), and the last two decades have seen him go on to achieve considerable International acclaim. Awarded an OBE and CBE for services to music, Courtney is a professor of Music at Westminster University and has a doctorate from Leeds College of Music. His recordings and live work have been recognized critically throughout his long career, with numerous music awards including BBC Jazz Awards, MOBO and Mercury Music Prizes. He is regularly voted in the top twenty Black Britons polls.
