BIOGRAPHY
Winner of the 2002 National Jazz Award for Guitarist of the Year and a six-time Juno nominee for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, guitarist-composer Michael Occhipinti’s adventurous, modern jazz sounds reference folk, world music and blues. His project The Sicilian Jazz Project, saw Michael arrange Sicilian folk music, some taken from 1950’s recordings by musicologist Alan Lomax, for his sextet. Michael’s talents extend outside the jazz world. For his performance with the esteemed Gryphon Trio, he wrote and arranged music for string trio and guitar. He also performed Gavin Bryars' After The Requiem for a production by the National Ballet of Canada.
