The Derek Trucks Band To Light The Fuse For The 2009 Edmonton International Jazz Festival!
One of the finest guitar players of his generation, Trucks returns to the city after his debut Edmonton-area show quickly sold out Festival Place in June 2007. Touring his latest release, the critically-acclaimed Already Free, Trucks is considered not only a brilliant improviser, serious composer and tunesmith, but also the leader of one of the most explosive and progressive bands touring today.
Trucks tours with longtime bandmates, drummer Yonrico Scott, bassist Todd Smallie, singer Mike Mattison, percussionist Count M’Butu, and keyboard player and flautist Kofi Burbridge. Whether he and his musical companions dip into an original piece, a Bob Dylan song, or a classic John Coltrane composition, the band sculpts performances nothing short of sensational, combining global beats and jazz influences with the blues-based rock sounds created in his backyard.
About to celebrate his 30th birthday, the Jacksonville, FL native has released a string of recordings, Songlines and Soul Serenade among them, that earned him a reputation as the most gifted and visionary slide guitar player of his generation -possibly the last 40 years. He has recorded memorable sides with many of his blues, soul, and world beat heroes and mentors, including Buddy Guy, David Sanborn, Solomon Burke, Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as well as Toots and The Maytals. He also spent considerable time on the road as a foil in Eric Clapton’s road band in 2007, and maintains his decade-long membership in the Allman Brothers Band.
